So I am reading Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. So far the mother of Jane Eyre makes me very angry! She has four kids Jane, Eliza , John, and Georgiana Reed. She doesn't spend anytime with Jane, only with the other three children. She says that Jane isn't sociable and dose not act child like and she will not be able to join the family until she can speak pleasantly (or correct) and when she stops asking her elders questions. " Eliza, John, and Georgiana were now clustered round their mama in the drawing-room: she lay reclined on a sofa by the fireside, and with her darlings about her ( for the time neither quarrelling nor crying) looked perfectly happy. Me she had dispensed from joining the group; saying she regretted to be under the necessity of keeping me distance; but that until she heard from Bessie, and could discover by her own observation that I was to be endeavouring in good earnest to acquire a more sociable and childlike disposition" I found this to be quite heartless on the mother part. You are to except your children the way the are. I find this more infuriating when the mother (this is later in the text) actually send her daughter away cause she dose not want to see her and tells her she isn't aloud to talk until she can "act right"! I cannot wait to continue reading this book!

This sounds like a great book. I totally agree on the fact that mother is absolutely terrible toward Jane, and that she should treat her like the rest of the children. I would like to read this book.
ReplyDeleteChildern will be childern, parnets will be parnets, and 19th century will be 19th century novels. It always seems like 19th century novels written by woemn are about lonely girls with boring lives and unhappy situations...
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about 19th century work. I don't enjoy it as much, either, but THIS book is different. It is one of the few books from England written in this time period I enjoyed. Read it and see...Jane Eyre is quite different from the whiny women in Pride and Prejudice. (At least I think so).
DeleteUg that mother is super mean. And if she wanted her to change so much I don't think pushing her away from socializing would help. I'm interested to hear your next posts!
ReplyDeleteAs a liberal, I find that these norms that women are inclined to follow are an anachronism. It happened in the 1400's to 1950's,AND IS TOTALLY silly. and I agree with BlunderLass, what is with 19th century women? ( If that was offensive, I apologize. Sometimes my mouth opens and spews out nonsense before I think.)
ReplyDeleteThat is so horrible. Some people just are so cruel. I hope the daughter shows her mother up and proves how amazing she is. Like a Cinderella story...minus the evil siblings.
ReplyDeleteThe family life kind of sucks but this makes Jane grow into the fabulous character that you will read about later.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of that actually happening in real life and it absolutely erks me because it is no way right. Mothers should love and treat all their children equally, looking forward to more posts!
ReplyDeleteJust to clarify a confused point: the woman is NOT Jane's mother. Jane's parents have died, and Jane's uncle (her mother's brother) has taken her in. Thus, this woman(Jane's aunt by marriage to the brother) doesn't think Jane is equal to her children and resents having her in her home. Still, she treats her horribly. But read on; you won't be disappointed in the strength of Jane Eyre.
ReplyDeleteThat is crazy how Jane is being treated!!! that makes me mad! i agree that its not right at all! sounds like a great book so far!
ReplyDeleteSounds... different, but good. Hope you stick with this book.
